AYURVEDA TREATMENT FOR CONSTIPATION

Constipation is the condition where the person has difficulty passing stool. A person is said to constipated when they pass less than three bowel movements a week with difficulty.

The main features are infrequent or hard stool, abdominal pain, bloating, and unsatisfactory bowel movement

Causes of constipation:

§ Low fiber intake

§ Less intake of water

§ Frequent travelling

§ Sitting in the same position for long time

§ Depression

§ Lack of physical activity

§ Excess use of anacids

§ Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, colon cancer,parkinsonism ;etc.

§ Age (digestive power gets low with age)

In ayurveda it is called as vibandha. here the vata dosha and pureesha mala are the major factors responsible for this condition,which cause imbalance in all tridoshas.

Depending upon dosha predomionance it is of 3 types:

· Vataja :dry hard stools with pain,bloating and discomfort

· Pittaja :inflammatory condition like acidity or loose stools is present

· Kaphaja : sluggigh digestion with heavy stools is present.

Ayurveda treatment includes, dietary modification to improve water intake & including fiber intake in diet. Lifestyle modification like regular exercise to stimulate bowel movements,avoiding stress and pranayama practices.

internal medications like triphala,castor oil ,avvipattikara churna,trivrut lehyam,senna are helpful.

Yoga asanas such as bhujangasana and pacchimottanasana , pavanamuktasana also help to improve digestion & regulate bowel movements.

External panchakarma therapies like virecana and basti are helpful to detoxify the body and cleanse the digestive system, while balancing the tridoshas.
