Ayurvedic Approach to Preventing and Managing Arsha
(Piles)
Ayurveda is a holistic approach to strengthening rectal veins and preventing Arsha (piles) by balancing the doshas, particularly Vata and Pitta, and improving Agni (digestive fire). This approach includes Ahara (diet), Vihara (lifestyle), Aushadha (herbal medicines), and Yoga Asanas (postures) to promote regular bowel movements, reduce Shotha (inflammation), and improve circulation.
AHARA (Diet)
A wholesome, Vata-Pitta balancing and fiber-rich diet is essential to prevent Vibandha (constipation) and the straining that causes Arsha.
Pathya – Foods to Consume:
- High-fiber foods (Snigdha, Mridu Ahara): Include whole grains like oats, brown rice, and daliya, along with fruits like papaya (Madhura rasa), figs (Anjeer), apples, and citrus fruits; and vegetables like spinach (Palak), bottle gourd (Lauki), and carrots.
- Healthy hydration (Jalasevana): Drink 8–10 glasses of water daily. Warm water (Ushna jala) or herbal tea (Kwatha) supports Agni. Buttermilk with cumin (Takra with Jeeraka) and coconut water (Nariyal jala) are ideal.
- Digestive spices (Deepaniya Dravya): Add cumin (Jeeraka), ginger (Ardraka), turmeric (Haridra), and fennel (Saunf) to enhance Agni (digestive power).
- Warm, cooked food (Ushna, Snigdha Ahara): Favor warm, cooked, oily foods to pacify Vata dosha and support smooth elimination.
- Natural laxatives (Mridu Virechaka Dravya): A glass of warm milk with ghee (Ghrita) or soaked raisins (Draksha) at night helps relieve Vibandha.
Apathya – Foods to Avoid:
- Spicy and processed foods (Amla, Lavana, Katu Rasa Ahara): These aggravate Pitta dosha and cause Shotha (inflammation).
- Refined foods (Vishama Ahara): Avoid Maida and refined products that lead to Vibandha (constipation)
- Dehydrating drinks: Limit caffeine and alcohol, as they increase Pitta and deplete body fluids(Rasa Dhatu).
VIHARA (Lifestyle Practices)
Vyayama (Exercise):
Regular moderate activities like walking and Yoga Asanas enhance Agni and bowel regularity. Avoid Ati-bharavahana (heavy lifting) which strains rectal veins.
- Vega Dharana: Never suppress natural urges. Respond promptly to the call of nature to prevent Vata vitiation.
- Sitz bath (Avagaha Sweda): Use warm water with herbal powders like Triphala Churna to soothe pain and Shotha (inflammation).
- Avoid prolonged sitting (Ati-Asana): Take breaks to walk or stretch. Use a soft cushion to reduce anal pressure.
- Manasika Shanti (Mental calmness): Practice Dhyana (meditation) and Pranayama to relieve stress and support digestive health.
YOGA ASANA
- Malasana (Garland Pose): Deep squat that relaxes the pelvic floor and eases bowel movement.
- Pawanmuktasana (Wind-relieving Pose): Stimulates Agni and helps in releasing trapped Vata
(gas). - Ashwini Mudra: Rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the anal muscles to enhance Rakta Sanchara (blood circulation) and strengthen rectal veins.
Chikitsa Siddhanta (Treatment Principles of Arsha)
- According to Ayurveda, Arsha (piles) can be treated through a fourfold approach called Chaturvidha Chikitsa:
- Shastra Karma: Surgical methods for removal of large or complicated Arsha (piles).
- Kshara Karma: Application of Kshara (alkaline caustic substances) for controlled cauterization
and healing. - Agni Karma: Cauterization using heat or fire to shrink and heal the mass.
- Aushadha Chikitsa: Internal and external herbal medications will be given.
